MALLALA RACEWAY near Adelaide may have thrown Team Tom the toughest challenge of its 2010 Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship campaign to date – but at the half way point of the season Tom Tweedie still holds the series lead.

A broken driveshaft just two minutes into Friday’s first practice session on Friday hampered the teams’ efforts for the remainder of the weekend, though tenacious driving netted the team results of second, fourth and third in the three races, respectively.

The broken driveshaft cost Tweedie valuable dry-weather track time, leaving them with only 30 minutes of running in pouring rain as preparation prior to qualifying.

Despite the dramas, Tweedie still holds a three-point lead heading into the mid-season break. Mitch Evans is second whilst Ben Barker’s three wins closed him to within nine points of the lead in a title fight rapidly heating up.

“Its game on from here,” Tweedie said.

“It’s like starting from scratch with everyone so close, but it’s nice to hold a small buffer despite having a really tough weekend here at Mallala.

“The experience the local teams have at this track was critical and one of the reasons why we struggled given we had no dry track time before qualifying. But despite that we are looking ahead feeling positive because we’re still leading and the second half of the season should have some strong circuits for us.”

The last three rounds of the championship include races at Morgan Park (QLD), Eastern Creek (NSW) and Sandown Raceway in Victoria.

“Our car will struggle compared to the F307s at Eastern Creek, but we beat Mitch (Evans) at Sandown last year so that round looks like one where we will have a very good chance.

“The best thing is Morgan Park is a complete unknown, no one has any real experience there so it’s going to be a level playing field and a new experience for everyone.

“Our team has been fantastic this season at getting the car up to speed quickly on new circuits so we’re looking forward to Queensland and see it as a round where we can compete for the win.

“Overall, the best position for us to be in is to be in front, so it’s game on for the second half of the year.”

Team Tom can be seen in action at Mallala on SBS Speedweek, 2PM Sunday June 13th.

Team Tom would like to thank Tizzana vineyards, Wurth, Stilo Helmets and the members of the Team Tom Supporters club for their ongoing support of his Formula 3 campaign.
