21/08/2008 - Tweedie Returns to Victory Lane and Maintains Second Place in NSW Formula
ford 1600 Championship
After qualifying second and winning the opening race during the fifth
and penultimate round of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship it as
looked as though Tom Tweedie was on track to take out his first round
win of the year, but unfortunately it wasn't to be.
Both race two and three didn't turn out the best, as during the second
race Tweedie and Leigh Burgess came together that saw Tweedie spin and
become airborne and that caused suspension and brakes damage, but he still
finished the race, although back in ninth.
Tweedie was on a charge through the field in the third and final race
only to be slowed by gearbox woes, which quite possibly could have been
caused by his race two accident, and once again finished in ninth.
Despite all the dramas over the weekend, Tweedie was pleased to register
his second win of the year, and to also maintain his second placing in
the overall NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship point standings.
"The weekend started great, as I qualified second and won the opening
race, so I was pleased happy about that," said the #19 Anglo Australian
Motorsport Comtec Spirit driver.
"It was really disappointing with how the remainder of the weekend
turned out, and if it wasn't for the incident in the second race, I felt
I might have had a chance to claim a championship round win. With one
round to go and Ryan [Simpson] close to taking out the championship, the
aim is to just do the very best I can to claim a round win and also maintain
my current place in the championship."
Tweedie's confidence heading into the sixth and final round of the NSW
Formula Ford 1600 Championship on September 27 & 28 as it is to be
held at Eastern Creek Raceway. It was back during the second round of
the championship in May where Tweedie had an awesome weekend with Ryan
Simpson and it also saw him claim a race win, and this time the 19-year-old
is planning to go there and win the whole round.
Tweedie is also in the final evaluation selection for CAMS Rising Star
support for the 2009 Australian Formula Ford Championship and will be
testing at Winton Motor Raceway in Northern Victoria in a week's time
for two days in a Duratec Australian Championship car. He also will be
racing one of Minda Motorsport's new Spectrum Formula Ford's this coming
weekend at the Winton during the penultimate round of the Victorian Championship,
so Tweedie will be well acquainted with the circuit and also is scheduled
to race for Minda in the final round of the Victorian Championship at
Phillip Island Raceway. 2008 will have been a busy and rewarding year
for Tweedie and will assist him greatly in his future motor racing career
and Europe hopefully in two years time.
