TOM TWEEDIE will head into the final round of the 2011 Fujitsu V8 Supercar series looking to break into the series’ top-ten after closing the gap with a strong weekend at Sandown recently.

The Sydney driver broke through for his first top ten race finish of the season at the Melbourne track at the weekend and pulled nearly 70 points out of the driver in front of him in the series standings with one round to go.

After a frustrating qualifying session saw red flags emerge on two occasions when Tweedie’s MW Motorsport Falcon was on a substantially quicker lap, Tweedie started race one from a lowly 21st but worked his way forward aggressively in the wet conditions to finish race one 14th.

Race two was the best performance, however, Tom working his way to 9th at the end of a combative 15 laps in a carnage-filled affair.

Tweedie copped a massive hit in his left passenger door early in the race after another car cut the chicane at turns two and three – knocking Tweedie’s car into another and bending a king pin in the front suspension – causing his steering to be skewed hard left.

Despite the car not tracking correctly due to the damage, Tweedie continued to push as hard as possible to score his first top ten of the season.

That result translated to 12th (on older tyres) in the final race and 11th overall for the round – just 11 points out of the top ten overall.

Having scored his best round points haul of the year, Tweedie can now target the top ten overall in the standings ahead of the Sydney Telstra 500, to be held in two weeks time on the streets of Sydney Olympic Park – the scene of his V8 Supercar debut 12 months ago.

“I can’t wait for Sydney,” Tweedie said.

“It will be the first track we go to this year where I have driven a V8 Supercar before so that will be a great advantage and should see us challenging for more strong top-ten race finishes.

“It was a tough weekend at Sandown with changeable weather and having to spend much of Friday’s practice sessions working on car setup after the rear of the car was completely rebuilt following Bathurst.

“But the team worked really hard and gave me a good package, especially working well to get the steering fixed after the damage caused in race two. Every time I get in the car I feel more confident and learn something new, so to be able to have a quick turnaround for the Sydney Telstra 500 next week will be great.

“I’m looking forward to ending my debut season in the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series strongly in my home town and in front of the Team Tom Supporters Club members in Sydney.”
